Olaf Scholz loses the vote of confidence and Germany approaches new elections

This Monday, the German Parliament (Bundestag) withdrew confidence in the Government of Olaf Scholza vote that was planned as a formality after the liberals abandoned the tripartite coalition in November, and has thus paved the way for early elections scheduled for the end of February.

The social democrat Schozl has achieved the support of only 207 of the 717 deputies present in the Chamber at the time of the vote. Another 160 representatives have abstained, while a total of 394 deputies have voted against the chancellor.

With this resolution, the German president, Frank-Walter Steinmeiermay dissolve Parliament and call new elections. What happened is just a formality, since the Government and the rest of the main parties in the Bundestag had already agreed to hold early elections for February 23, 2025.
