Ohanaeze: Collaboration between Southeast Governors and South East Development Commission for Regional Development

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, disclosed on Wednesday that Southeast governors are committed to utilizing the Southeast Development Commission (SEDC) for the development of the region.

The SEDC bill, co-sponsored by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, covers Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.

Through the SEDC, funds from the Federation Account will be managed to address the longstanding infrastructural gaps in the Southeast, particularly in road construction and rehabilitation.

Additionally, the SEDC will address ecological challenges that have plagued the region for many years.

According to a statement by Alex Ogbonnia, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, the South East governors, led by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, will seize the opportunity presented by the Commission to implement programs that will tap into and promote various sectors such as industry, agriculture, tourism, energy, commerce, and investment in the region. This collaboration will also aim to establish a centralized security system and more.

Recently, the Minister of Works, Senator David Nweze Umahi, announced the Federal Government’s plans to construct a 477-kilometer six-lane Super Highway connecting five states to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, passing through Abakiliki, Enugu, and Nsukka along the way.

Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, expressed gratitude to the President for these initiatives, which signify progress for the region.

Highlighting the challenges faced by the Igbo community, Ohanaeze has attributed them to Igbophobia, a deep-rooted fear of the Igbo people in a nation where they have made significant contributions. The recent actions taken, such as the signing of the SEDC Bill into law by President Bola Tinubu and the appointments of Senator Dave Nweze Umahi and Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, indicate a positive shift from previous regimes.

This marks a significant step forward and a promising new chapter for the region, as evidenced by the enthusiastic response from the community.
