Obasanjo Calls for Accountability Among Nigerian Leaders

Expressing his discontent with the current state of Nigeria, former President Olusegun Obasanjo suggested that many of the country’s leaders should be held accountable behind bars or even the gallows rather than occupying public offices.

During a discussion with six members of the House of Representatives, Obasanjo emphasized the importance of considering the character and integrity of leaders when making choices in governance.

He stressed that without a shift in the mindset of leaders, the desired change in the country would remain elusive.

Obasanjo questioned the quality of leadership, pointing out that systemic changes alone would not suffice if individuals with questionable character continued to hold positions of power.

He urged a reconsideration of the selection process for leaders, focusing on qualities like integrity, track record, and role modeling as essential criteria for those aspiring to govern.

Obasanjo’s remarks resonated with the lawmakers he engaged with, who included Abdulmalik Danga from Kogi, Dr. Usman Midala from Borno, Matthew Nwogu from Imo, Peter Aniekwe from Anambra, Kama Nkemkanma from Ebonyi, and Ugochinyere Ikenga from Imo.
