NYSC member who died during AFCON match leaves Yola for burial amidst tears

On Saturday, the body of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Peter Yunana, who tragically passed away during Wednesday’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match between Nigeria and South Africa, was departed from Yola, the capital of Adamawa State. His colleagues and students from the school where he was serving were overwhelmed with emotions.

Yunana was one of the several Nigerians who lost their lives due to the tension surrounding the semifinal match between Nigeria and South Africa.

He had been deployed to teach at the Government Secondary School, Numan, and it was there while watching the AFCON match that he suddenly collapsed and died.

His body, scheduled for burial in Makarfi, Kaduna State on Sunday, was transported out of Yola on Saturday in preparation for the funeral.

As he was being conveyed in an ambulance from Yola to Makarfi, a significant number of his colleagues and students showed up to bid him farewell.

At the Numan bridge, along the Yola-Gombe highway, NYSC colleagues, GSS students and staff, as well as government officials, including the Secretary of Numan Local Government, David Belu Afremond, gathered to pay their respects to Yunana.

The deceased was a 26-year-old graduate in Community Health from Shehu Idris College of Health Technology, Makarfi, Kaduna State.

He commenced his NYSC registration on November 1, 2023, and was supposed to complete his service on October 31, 2024. He was teaching Chemistry at GSS Numan as part of his service.
