NSCDC Captures Eight Suspected Vandals of Streetlights in Katsina Protest


The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, Katsina Command, has arrested eight individuals suspected of vandalizing streetlights and armoured cables in the capital.

While addressing journalists in Katsina on Tuesday, the spokesman for the command, DSC Buhari Hamisu, revealed the apprehension of the suspects.

Before the protest began, Hamisu mentioned that some suspects had already been taken into custody.

Detailing the events, Hamisu shared, “On July 26, the NSCDC’s Special Anti-vandal team apprehended 25-year-old Salmanu Mas’ud from Kofar Yandaka area, in Katsina metropolis, known for his involvement in vandalizing public infrastructure and theft.”

He continued, “During the investigation, Mas’ud confessed to committing the crimes alongside an accomplice named Aminu, also known as ‘Danhajiya’, who is currently on the run.”

“Further probing revealed that the duo had dismantled armoured cables of streetlights in the same vicinity, selling them to scrap dealers who are now at large, making a profit of N27,000,” Hamisu added.

Additionally, on July 28, Shamsu Sani, aged 25, residing opposite the General Hospital in Katsina, and 18-year-old Muhammadu Ahmed from Saulawa Area were apprehended for similar offenses.

“These suspects, experts in vandalizing streetlights, armoured cables, and theft, were caught in the act at Kofar Sauri,” stated Hamisu.

He mentioned that the suspects confessed to their deeds and that investigations uncovered a previous incident where they had vandalized armoured cables of streetlights behind the General Hospital, selling them to a scrap dealer for N23,000.

Hamisu elaborated that five more alleged vandals were seized in various locations throughout the state, all admitting to their involvement in criminal activities.

He assured that ongoing investigations would lead to the prosecution of the suspects in due course.

“The commandant urges the citizens to abide by the law and adhere to regulations,” urged Hamisu.

Reassuring the public of robust security measures, he vowed the commitment of the command to unveil the activities of vandals, economic saboteurs, and other offenders.

Hamisu also urged parents to monitor their children closely and caution them against engaging in unlawful acts or other vices.

“The command is resolute in creating a tranquil environment for the people of the state and the nation at large,” affirmed Hamisu.
