NLC Criticizes Zamfara Government over N8,000 Teachers’ Salary

Amidst the nationwide demand for a new minimum wage, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rebuked the Zamfara State government for retaining a minimum wage of N8,000 for primary school teachers across its 14 local government areas.

During the Workers’ Day celebration at the J.B. Secretariat in Gusau, the Chairman of NLC in Zamfara State, Sani Halliru, expressed dismay that despite various efforts, primary school teachers in the state were still receiving a meager N8,000 as their monthly salary.

In his address, Halliru mentioned, “Despite the pressure exerted on both the past and present administrations, our colleagues at the primary school level are still being paid N8,000 as their monthly salary.”

Appealing to Governor Dauda Lawal to enforce the current N30,000 national minimum wage for Zamfara school teachers, the NLC chairman highlighted their devotion despite the inadequate pay they receive.

He further stated, “The workers in Zamfara State are eagerly awaiting the NLC national leadership to take a stance on the proposed N750,000 new minimum wage in the country.”

In response, Governor Lawal praised the state’s civil servants for their diligence and commitment amid various challenges they face.

He reassured them of his administration’s dedication to their welfare, saying, “I will avoid making promises that are unsustainable, but rest assured, I plan to pleasantly surprise you.”
