NLC gives Niger Govt 24 hours to refund deductions from salaries NLC issues ultimatum to Niger State Government

Organised labour in Niger State has set a 24-hour deadline for the government to initiate reimbursement of deducted funds from civil servants for the Contributory Health Care Scheme. Failure to comply may lead to a prolonged industrial action disrupting state operations.

Comrade Idris Lafene, the state chairman, delivered the ultimatum during a subdued commemoration of International Workers Day 2024 in Minna.

The event took place at Justice Legbo Kutigi International Centre, deviating from the customary venue at the 123 Quarters parade ground.

The state’s former governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bell, introduced the Contributory Health Care Scheme, wherein two percent of civil servants’ salaries were deducted.

Lafene voiced concerns, stating, “Waking up to reports of NICARE initiating deductions from our members’ salaries was not part of our agreement with the Niger State Government.”

“We urge the state authorities to refund our funds and hold accountable those responsible for these unauthorized deductions, or the scheme will face cancellation.”

Representing Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, the Head Of Service Abubakar Salihu assured NLC members of prompt government action on the matter.

Salihu allocated N5 million to the 25 LGs in Niger State to alleviate transportation challenges stemming from fuel shortages.

In a supportive gesture, Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, pledged the government’s commitment to enhance workers’ welfare, offering a donation of N2.5 million for transportation assistance.

Additionally, the Chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Niger State, Ibrahim Gana, emphasized in a presentation titled “People’s First” that societal progress hinges on the government prioritizing citizen welfare in policy formulations.
