Nigerians in the UK to undergo COVID-19 test before evacuation

The Nigeria High Commission in the United Kingdom has announced that Nigerians wishing to be evacuated to Nigeria due to the Coronavirus pandemic will need to undergo a compulsory Coronavirus test in the UK before they can board the flight back to Nigeria.

As per a memo sent to Nigerians, the High Commission stated that Nigerian citizens can get their test performed through public medical facilities or through private medical outfits equipped with the necessary test kits. The memo also suggested two private medical outfits Nigerians can reach out to for a private COVID-19 test. The cost of the private test kit is £350 (N140,000).

“This is a Public Health England-approved COVID-19 testing kit. Laboratory results are said to be available within 3-5 working days. The test is for patients 16 years and older. Therefore, individuals are free to make their choices and decisions, as we look forward to bringing them back home. Boarding will not be allowed without having undergone the COVID–19 Test,” the memo stated.

The Commission did not, however, mention whether individuals who test positive and negative would be flown back together. Additionally, the Commission mentioned that it has begun receiving applications for evacuation but will not commence testing for COVID-19 until there are about 100 applications. The Commission also noted that the cost of testing, to be borne by prospective evacuees, would be refunded if it fails to obtain 100 applications.

Reportedly, about 100 Nigerians have indicated interest in leaving the UK and another 45 in the US.

Last week, the Federal government announced plans to evacuate Nigerians in high-risk countries back home. However, those who wish to return will bear the financial implications and must undergo a 14-day quarantine upon their arrival in Nigeria.
