Nigerians given 12-hour ultimatum to leave South African province after cop’s fatal stabbing

The Keimoes and Upington areas of Northern Cape, South Africa, have reportedly issued an ultimatum to Nigerians and other foreign nationals, requiring them to leave the communities within 12 hours.

According to a statement released by Adetola Olubajo, the president of Nigeria Union in South Africa, the directive came after a Nigerian allegedly stabbed a South African police officer, resulting in the officer’s death. The details of the altercation are still unclear as the main witness was also critically injured.

Following the tragic incident, community members in Keimoes and surrounding areas engaged in violent activities, including burning and destroying properties belonging to foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians. The unrest spread to Upington, leading to the expulsion of Nigerians and other foreign nationals from that area as well. Prompt police intervention helped restore calm, although the situation remains tense, with some locals being apprehended for public disturbance and property damage.

The suspected perpetrator of the stabbing has been arrested and will appear in court by Monday. Olubajo commended the swift response of the South African Police Service and expressed hope that they will continue to maintain law and order in the area.
