Nigerian Minister Vows to Penalize Manufacturers of Low-Quality Water Supply Equipment

Addressing the issue of insufficient potable water supply and challenges in irrigation farming, Prof Joseph Utsav, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, attributed these problems to substandard water supply equipment.

The minister declared that the Nigerian government will take punitive actions against companies responsible for producing inferior products for water supply and irrigation purposes.

During a visit to a pipe and fittings manufacturer in Kano, which caters to water supply, irrigation, and consumption needs nationwide, Utsav emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards substandard equipment.

He emphasized, “Any entity found importing substandard goods will face repercussions.”

Impressed by the quality standards maintained by the company he visited, the minister encouraged them to uphold their excellence and support local content as per the Nigerian Content Policy.

Part of the agenda set by President Bola Tinubu, Utsav underscored the importance of collaboration between water users, irrigation stakeholders, and these manufacturers.

He reiterated, “While the federal government is responsible for providing potable water, it is imperative for states and local governments to fulfill their duties.”

Highlighting the necessity to safeguard water supply projects, the minister noted, “Many water schemes failed due to the use of substandard materials.”
