Nigerian Chess Champion Tunde Onakoya Makes History with 58-Hour Chess Marathon

In an incredible feat, Nigerian chess grandmaster Tunde Onakoya has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest-ever chess game marathon.

Sharing his excitement on his official X account, Onakoya announced his successful accomplishment and expressed his determination to extend the record to an impressive 60 hours.

He wrote, “We have achieved our goal of breaking the record.

“Our next target is 60 hours, and we are not backing down. Let’s continue this journey.

“Our primary aim is to raise funds for educating underprivileged children in Africa. This is the driving force behind our efforts.

“Let’s showcase the immense power of love to the world. Together, we can make a difference.”

Onakoya surpassed the previous record holders, Norwegian players Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad, who played for 56 hours and 9 minutes back in 2018.

The ongoing challenge, unfolding at the iconic Times Square in New York City, has already surpassed the 56-hour mark, firmly establishing Onakoya as the new record holder.

Speaking about the event, Onakoya highlighted its dual purpose of raising funds and awareness to provide educational opportunities for disadvantaged children across Africa, a cause championed by his foundation, Chess in Slums Africa.

In a statement from the foundation, it was revealed that the marathon features a dynamic duo consisting of Onakoya and his American counterpart, Shawn Martinez, a US National Master and renowned chess coach based in New York City.

“This record-breaking attempt involves a team of two players, namely Tunde Onakoya from Nigeria and Shawn Martinez from the US. Both players hold the prestigious title of National Masters.

“Shawn Martinez, a celebrated figure in the world of chess, serves as a formidable opponent. Both players will be recognized for this record-breaking achievement.”

“The challenge entails continuously playing chess for the longest duration, with the time recorded down to the seconds. This feat can only be attempted by a duo.”

Several prominent figures including President Bola Tinubu, Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and renowned musicians Davido and Adekunle Gold have shown their support for Onakoya’s extraordinary endeavor.
