Nigeria Supports Brazilian Candidate for Interpol Secretary

The Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, has announced Nigeria’s full backing for Valdecy Urquiza of Brazil as the candidate for the Interpol Secretary General position, urging all partners and allies to unite in support.

Gaidam conveyed this message during a meeting with a delegation from Interpol led by Vice President Valdecy Urquiza at the Ministry of Police Affairs headquarters in Abuja.

In a statement by Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, Bolaji Kazeem, the Minister highlighted Urquiza’s candidacy as a significant milestone in Interpol’s leadership, citing his experience and dedication as qualities that make him a strong contender for the Secretary General role.

Gaidam expressed confidence in Urquiza’s leadership skills, expertise, and commitment to international security, emphasizing the long-standing collaboration between Nigeria and Brazil in areas such as law enforcement, counterterrorism, and cybersecurity.

He acknowledged their joint efforts in combatting drug trafficking through coordinated operations and intelligence sharing as a testament to the strong partnership between the two countries.

Recognizing Interpol’s pivotal role in ensuring global peace and security through enhanced police cooperation, Gaidam emphasized the need for effective leadership in addressing modern security challenges.

He noted Nigeria’s contributions to Interpol, including the appointment of AIG Garba Baba Umar (retd) as the Vice President for Africa, underscoring the country’s commitment to combating transnational crime.

The Minister underscored the importance of Interpol’s support in enhancing Nigeria’s law enforcement capabilities through intelligence sharing, training, and joint operations to tackle cross-border criminal activities.

Urquiza, in seeking Nigeria’s endorsement for the Secretary General position, emphasized the potential for reform and inclusivity, highlighting the importance of a diverse and neutral leadership to best serve all member nations.
