NFF tasks Finidi with Super Eagles qualification for 2026 World Cup and developing local talent

It has been assigned to Finidi George by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to ensure the Super Eagles secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Following two draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, the Super Eagles currently occupy the third position in their group.

On Friday, June 7, the two-time African champions will face South Africa’s Bafana Bafana before taking on Benin’s Squirrels a few days later.

Speaking to SuperSport, Ikpeba, a member of the NFF technical committee, stated, “In June, Nigeria will compete in crucial matches against South Africa and Benin.”
“We find ourselves in a difficult position after two drawn World Cup qualifiers, and therefore, winning the upcoming games is imperative.
“We possess talented players, and with Finidi’s ability to maximize their potential, we can secure our qualification for the World Cup.”

Ikpeba emphasized that the new coach will be required to offer increased opportunities to players based in Nigeria to represent the Super Eagles.
“He resides here and manages Enyimba, the NPFL champions,” stated Ikpeba.
“He will promote the inclusion of local players in his squad.
“It is essential for him to focus internally, as this is how Finidi George emerged as a player.”
