NFF announces Finidi George as the new head coach for Super Eagles

The appointment of Finidi George as the new head coach for Super Eagles has been confirmed by the Nigeria Football Federation.

In a decision that saw him chosen over Emmanuel Amuneke, the former international player will now lead the team.

After spending 20 months as an assistant to José Santos Peseiro, George assumed the role on an interim basis following Peseiro’s departure. This occurred after the team secured the runner-up position in the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire 2023. This interim period included overseeing two friendly matches in Morocco last month.

George’s primary focus now is to lead the Super Eagles to victory in two crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic in Uyo and Abidjan, respectively. This task must be completed in just over five weeks.

These upcoming matches are of utmost importance, as the Super Eagles currently sit in third place in Group C of the African campaign, trailing Rwanda and South Africa.
