My Motivation for Attempting Guinness World Record with a 150-Hour Mathematics Lesson – MC Calculus

After setting a new Guinness World Record with a 150-hour non-stop mathematics lesson, Mr Uduak Nanga, known as Mc Calculus, shared that he took on this challenge to showcase that mathematics is not only easy but also enjoyable, especially for the younger generation.

Hailing from Ikono Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nanga completed the feat at Kings Kid Christian International High School in Uyo. He expressed his goal of reigniting the enthusiasm for mathematics among the youth during a recent conversation with our correspondent.

An Electrical/Electronic Engineering graduate from Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Nanga had previously collaborated with organizations like UNESCO to foster an interest in mathematics among students in the state. His passion for the subject was instilled by his mother, Mrs Rose Edet Nanga, who made it a daily routine to review his math notes since primary school.

Encountering technical difficulties that led to losing the first 10 hours of the world record attempt did not discourage the determined marathoner. He believes that mathematics is essential for solving complex real-life problems, fueling his drive to showcase its importance.

“It’s a realization of my dreams. Mathematics fuels my passion, and witnessing people worldwide dread it saddened me. That’s when I questioned how I could demonstrate globally that mathematics is enjoyable. So, the Guinness World Record attempt was not just for the record but a platform to advocate for a love of mathematics,” Nanga shared.

“This advocacy will help all, especially the youth, understand the practicality of mathematics beyond academics. It plays a crucial role in time management, planning, and problem-solving in everyday situations,” he added.

Emphasizing the persistence and step-by-step approach required in mathematics, Nanga observed a shift in people’s perception towards the subject during his marathon effort.

Currently teaching mathematics at a private secondary school in Akwa Ibom State, Nanga aims to inspire students across schools in the state and Nigeria through upcoming initiatives promoting math coaching.

He unveiled plans for a program titled Ultimate Brain Search, targeting participants from primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions. This program will feature quiz contests, debates, and symposiums centered on mathematics.
