Minister David Umahi rules out road rehabilitation as cause of Rivers tanker explosion

Debunking claims that road rehabilitation in Rivers State caused the recent tanker explosion that led to five deaths, Minister of Works David Umahi urged the Federal Road Safety Commission to implement checkpoints to monitor drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Umahi made these remarks while visiting the scene of the tragic incident in Eleme with a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Works.

Following a briefing from Governor Siminalayi Fubara, it was reported that five individuals lost their lives and 120 vehicles were destroyed in the avoidable disaster.

Umahi expressed condolences to the victims’ families and sympathized with the state government over the unfortunate event.

He criticized attempts to link the road rehabilitation to the tragedy, emphasizing President Bola Tinubu’s positive intent in approving the project.

Umahi highlighted that the bridge under reconstruction was widened to accommodate traffic diversions and criticized those trying to blame the government and construction company for the accident.

He conveyed his sympathy for the loss suffered by the victims’ families and the state, emphasizing that no amount of blame could undo the tragedy.

Umahi recalled President Tinubu’s directive to redesign the road due to its deplorable state, emphasizing the uniqueness and durability of the construction work being carried out.

He pointed out that the accident resulted from reckless driving and urged the Federal Road Safety Commission to step up monitoring for substances like ‘Mkpuru-mmiri’ and hard drugs which could impair drivers’ judgment.

Umahi commended the quality of work on the project and emphasized the government’s commitment to timely completion within the stipulated timeframe.

He ensured that additional sections of the construction would be opened and stressed the importance of adhering to project timelines as per the President’s policy.

Continuing his assessment, the Minister inspected the Enugu-Port Harcourt highway project, expressing satisfaction with the progress made by the construction company.
