Iran Slaps Sanctions on US and UK for Supporting Israel

Thursday saw the Iranian Government imposing sanctions on American and British individuals and entities for their backing of Israel in its conflict with the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

In a statement from its foreign ministry, the Islamic republic revealed the punitive actions it took.

The sanctions specifically targeted seven Americans, among them General Bryan P. Fenton, who leads the US special operations command, and Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, a former commander of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet.

British figures and entities singled out include Grant Shapps, the Secretary of State for Defence, James Hockenhull from the British army strategic command, and the UK Royal Navy in the Red Sea.

Penalties were also imposed on US corporations like Lockheed Martin and Chevron, as well as UK companies such as Elbit Systems, Parker Meggit, and Rafael UK.

The ministry detailed that the sanctions entail actions like “blocking of accounts and transactions in the Iranian financial and banking systems, blocking of assets within the jurisdiction of the Islamic Republic of Iran as well as prohibition of visa issuance and entry to Iranian territory”.

The true extent of these measures on the individuals or entities, alongside their assets or interactions with Iran, remains uncertain.

Recalling the conflict in the Gaza Strip initiated by an attack on Israel by Palestinian militants on October 7, resulting in the deaths of 1,170 people, mostly civilians, Iran supports Hamas but denies direct involvement in the incident.

Reports from the health ministry of Hamas-run territory indicate that Israel’s retaliatory actions against Hamas have claimed the lives of at least 34,568 individuals in Gaza, predominantly women and children.
