Men arrested by police for stealing POS machine and using funds for betting

Authorities from the Niger State Police Command have apprehended two individuals in connection with an alleged POS machine scam. The suspects, Augustine Odiokwu Nonso, 28, from Bosso Estate in Minna, and Ahmed Mohammed, 20, from Efu-Goro area in Mokwa, Mokwa Local Government, are accused of withdrawing N463,000 from the stolen device to place bets on Naija and Sporty platforms.

The arrests were made following reports filed against the suspects, as revealed by SP Wasiu Abiodun, the Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Police Command in Minna.

Nonso was caught on April 4, 2024, after fleeing with a POS machine and N170,000. The complaint against him was filed at the Bosso Division, leading to his arrest within Bosso Estate on April 20. He admitted to the crime and confessed to stealing approximately $117,000 which he used for Naijabet.

On the other hand, Mohammed was apprehended on May 5, 2024, following allegations of stealing a POS machine from a shop in Kainji, Borgu LG. He admitted to replacing the stolen machine with a faulty one from his collection and withdrawing N293,000 by observing and copying the password of the shop attendant. Mohammed claimed to have used the money for SportsBet.

Both suspects have been taken to court for prosecution, according to the police spokesperson.
