Meeting of PDP Reps Amid Party Crisis

Currently taking place at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, is a gathering of members of the House of Representatives caucus affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party.

Preceding a scheduled media briefing by 60 lawmakers aligning with Governors Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State later today, this meeting is significant.

A week ago, a group of 60 opposition legislators, spearheaded by Ikenga Ugochinyere from Imo State, called for the resignation of Umar Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, on grounds of incompetence and actions against the party’s interests.

Shortly after the Ugochinyere-led faction went public, the House’s minority caucus, under the leadership of Kingsley Chinda, disavowed the group, deeming it as an unfamiliar entity within the parliament.

While specific details of the ongoing gathering remain unclear as of now, it is likely linked to the upcoming National Executive Committee meeting of the party programmed for Thursday at the central PDP offices. Matters such as the alleged anti-party involvements of prominent party figures and the status of Damagum are anticipated to be deliberated on.

A lawmaker participating in the meeting disclosed to PUNCH Online in confidence that national issues are on the agenda for discussions.

He indicated that a comprehensive report on the meeting will be shared later in the day.

“It is a routine caucus meeting to evaluate the nation’s security situation,” he remarked.

Notably, both Chinda and Ugochinyere are present at the meeting.
