Gift Joseph-Egenti, a Lagos-based woman who chose to marry a physically challenged man, shares her story on what drew her to her husband and the challenges they faced from society due to their unconventional union.

How did your paths cross with your husband’s?

I am Gift Joseph-Egenti from Imo State, a secondary school graduate and a practicing auxiliary nurse. Our encounter happened in 2015 when my husband moved into my neighborhood. Initially, I had negative perceptions of him influenced by gossip from friends. However, a chance encounter led to us exchanging contacts, ultimately leading to our marriage in 2018.

The qualities that initially captivated me about him were his innocent demeanor, soothing voice, intelligence, and caring nature.

How do you cope with societal judgments and stereotypes?

I choose to brush off negative comments and judgments, focusing on my own convictions and happiness.

Have you encountered misconceptions about your relationship?

Various misconceptions arose, including skepticism about the durability of our relationship and assumptions about financial motives. However, we remain unfazed by such opinions.

What advice do you have for others in similar circumstances?

To anyone facing similar situations, my advice is simple – follow your heart. Do not let external judgments deter you from pursuing your happiness. Stay strong in your choice and stand firm against societal pressures.
