Manchester United Star Criticized by Alan Smith Following Palace Defeat

Alan Smith didn’t mince words when evaluating Manchester United’s defensive performance in their 4-0 loss to Crystal Palace. The former Arsenal striker specifically targeted Jonny Evans for his lackluster display.

During the game at Selhurst Park, the Red Devils struggled as Michael Olise, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Tyrick Mitchell all managed to score against them.

Smith was particularly critical of Mateta’s goal, where the striker easily bypassed Evans before taking a powerful shot with his left foot.

In comments after the match, Smith didn’t hold back, calling out Evans for his passive defending in the one-on-one situation. He labeled United’s defensive showing as a “disaster.”

Smith expressed astonishment at the ease with which Mateta made progress and scored, shedding light on the defensive weaknesses that had plagued United throughout the game.

“This situation perfectly encapsulates United’s performance. Defensively, it was a disaster. Jonny Evans was left one-on-one against a top striker and failed to react,” remarked Smith.
