Born on April 7, 1970, in San Francisco, California, to a financial planner father and a homemaker mother, MacKenzie Scott Tuttle divulged that she delved into serious writing at the age of 6 with her book The Book Worm, a 142-page composition that was regrettably destroyed in a flood.

In 1988, she completed her studies at Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut. She then obtained her bachelor’s degree in English from Princeton University in 1992, where she was mentored by the Nobel Laureate in Literature, Toni Morrison, who acclaimed Tuttle as “one of the best students I’ve ever had in my creative writing classes”.
