Judiciary workers in Ogun State halt strike action

Putting an end to their indefinite strike that commenced on April 8, members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) in Ogun State have decided to suspend their industrial action.

The announcement came on Monday through a statement released in Abeokuta by the Publicity Secretary of the union, Mr. Adewale Adenekan.

Earlier this month, the union had initiated the indefinite strike, citing the non-payment of a 40% peculiar allowance by the state government.

Detailing the latest developments, the statement mentioned that a meeting was convened on Monday with the participation of the National Officers of JUSUN and the Ogun JUSUN Executive Committee, alongside the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

In attendance at the meeting were also the state chairpersons of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Joint Negotiation Council (JNC).

According to the statement, after discussions with the representatives of the State Government, the legitimacy of the union’s demands was acknowledged.

However, the focal point of contention now revolves around the timeline for implementing the union’s demands, particularly in light of the forthcoming announcement by the Federal Government of the new minimum wage anticipated on May 1.

As highlighted by Adenekan, “This will be scheduled for implementation between May and June 2024 for both Federal and State workers.”
