Judicial Commission in Kano Convenes to Address Political Violence and Missing Persons

Commencing its proceedings on a significant note, the Judicial Commission on Political Violence and Missing Persons in Kano, under the leadership of Justice Zuwaira Yusuf, held its first session on Monday.

The commission, established by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, aims to delve into incidents of political violence and cases of missing persons that have occurred between 2015 and 2023.

In her opening address, Justice Zuwaira emphasized the pivotal role of the commission in scrutinizing the concerning occurrences of missing individuals and in proposing sustainable solutions to the challenges of politically motivated violence and disappearances of children within the state.

Highlighting the scope of their investigation, she mentioned, “The commission’s focus will encompass identifying victims of diverse forms of violence linked to the general elections of 2015, 2019, and 2023, while also evaluating the resulting tragic consequences on lives and properties.”

Furthermore, she affirmed the commission’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that those backing and carrying out political violence face the full weight of the law.

Justice Zuwaira reiterated the commission’s promise to undertake its responsibilities diligently and without bias, resisting any potential external influences.

In a call for action, she invited individuals, groups, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as well as victims and their families affected by political violence and disappearances to present their testimonies or petitions.
