Acknowledged as an attack – PMF verifies explosion at military base in Iraq

Confirming suspicions, Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) reiterated that the incident at Iraq’s military base was indeed an intentional attack.

Occurring late on Friday night, the explosion resulted in the tragic death of two PMF officials and the injury of eight others at Kalso military base in Babil Province, located around 50km to the south of Baghdad.

In an official statement, PMF disclosed that Abdul Aziz al-Mohammedawi, the chief of staff, had made a visit to the site, carefully examining the findings of the investigative committees deployed at the targeted location.

While the force commander labeled the event as a deliberate assault, the military, on the contrary, announced an ongoing investigation and emphasized the absence of any warplanes in the vicinity at the time of the explosion.

The Iraqi military informed that a specialized technical committee was actively investigating the underlying cause of the explosion and ensuing fire at the base, pinpointing the incident at 1 am on Saturday (2200 GMT on Friday).

A statement released by the military highlighted, “The air defense command’s comprehensive report, based on meticulous technical examinations and radar surveillance, conclusively verified the absence of any drone or fighter jet within Babil’s airspace leading up to and at the time of the explosion.”
