Israel’s Closure of Al Jazeera Raises Concerns about Press Freedom, UN Emphasizes

Following Israel’s decision to shut down Al Jazeera’s operations in the country, the United Nations (UN) has reiterated the significance of press freedom.

Stephane Dujarric, the UN spokesman in New York, expressed strong opposition to any actions that restrict press freedom, emphasizing that a free press plays a crucial role in keeping the public informed and involved.

The closure of Al Jazeera in Israel was announced after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disclosed that his Cabinet had unanimously voted for it. This move followed the approval of a new media law, nicknamed the “Al Jazeera law,” granting the government authority to prohibit foreign broadcasters if they are perceived as a threat to national security.

Al Jazeera has strongly condemned Israel’s decision and asserted its determination to explore all available options to safeguard its rights and employees.
