Highlighting the recent collapse of its five-story building, the centenary celebration committee of Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha – DMGS, reiterated that the root cause of the incident is yet to be determined.
As construction was underway for the school’s 100-year anniversary, the unfortunate collapse occurred, leaving some workers trapped beneath the rubble.
DMGS is a school under the ownership of the Diocese on the Niger, Anglican Communion.
In an official statement released by Dr. Chijioke Ojji, the Director of Operations for the centenary celebration, it was mentioned that while two individuals were successfully rescued from the debris, one worker lost his life. Plans are underway to collaborate with the deceased worker’s family to arrange a proper burial.
The statement conveyed, “On June 12, 2024, the DMGS Centenary building succumbed to structural failure at approximately 1:00 AM. Regrettably, three individuals were trapped, and despite rescue attempts, Gideon Ezeigwe succumbed to the incident.”
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, and we stand ready to support them through this grievous ordeal.
“The cause of the collapse remains shrouded in uncertainty and is presently subject to investigations by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Anambra State Physical Planning Board (ASPPB), and the Nigerian Police.
“We are fully cooperating with these authorities to ensure openness and answerability. The valor of volunteers and the cooperation of the Anambra State government, the Fire Service, and other responders are greatly acknowledged.
“Our primary focus remains on ensuring the safety of all and securing the site. We implore the public to depend on verified updates while steering clear of speculations on social platforms. We shall continue to disseminate factual details as the investigation progresses,” the school added.
