Investigation Launched by Police into the Assassination of Justice Igbetar


A thorough investigation is underway by the Benue State Police Command to unravel the mystery surrounding the assassination of retired Judge Justice Margaret Igbetar of the Benue State Customary Appeal Court.

Justice Igbetar was reportedly assassinated at her residence in Makurdi on Thursday by suspected individuals.

The Benue State Police Command has announced that several arrests have been made, and crucial evidence has been recovered to facilitate a comprehensive investigation.

The statement, signed by Benue Police Public Relations Officer Anene Catherine, stated, “On 24/8/2023 at about 1530hrs, information was received at ‘E’ Police Division Makurdi that Justice Margaret Mary Igbetar (rtd) was unresponsive and missing. Detectives were immediately dispatched to investigate.”

“During a search conducted in her house at Wantor Kwange street, Gboko road, Makurdi, her lifeless body was discovered in a pool of blood inside her kitchen. It was also observed that she had sustained deep cuts on her back,” the statement continued.

“Further investigation led to the arrest of one Aondohemba Joseph and the recovery of evidence for a detailed investigation,” it added.

While expressing condolences to the deceased’s family and friends, the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP. Bartholomew Nnamdi Onyeka PSC (+), condemned the heinous act and pledged his commitment to uncovering the truth behind her death and bringing the perpetrators of this brutal crime to justice.
