Insights from Deputy Reps Spokesman, Agbese, on Working with the Executive Arm

During a recent session on AIT’s ‘Democracy Today,’ Philip Agbese, Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, discussed how a two-day retreat on ‘Navigating Change: Legislative Strategies for Economic Transformation’ strengthened members’ oversight capacity and promoted collaboration for economic development and tax reforms.

Representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency of Benue State, Agbese highlighted Speaker Tajudeen Abass’s efforts in bringing lawmaking closer to the people through such engagements.

He emphasized the importance of involving critical stakeholders who may not always attend plenaries, giving them a platform to contribute significantly to national issues.

Agbese addressed the Petroleum Industry Reform Act (2021), emphasizing the parliament’s dedication to enhancing existing laws for the people’s welfare.

According to Agbese, parliamentary work is about ongoing development and enhancement to benefit the people. The retreat was a step towards this improvement process.

Agbese praised Speaker Abass’s leadership approach, focusing on constructive engagement and partnership for the country’s advancement.

He stressed that collaboration with the executive does not equate to surrendering parliamentary powers, but rather to wise power exercise in alignment with the constitution.

Agbese lauded Speaker Abass for prioritizing partnerships and constructive engagement as key elements in fulfilling parliamentary duties effectively.

Furthermore, Agbese pointed out that sustained engagement between the parliament and stakeholders from various sectors is crucial for Nigeria’s continuous progress and development.

He also highlighted the significance of having a strong knowledge base to engage constructively with people, a practice that Speaker Abass has promoted.
