IGP criticized for opposing state police establishment

Expressing disappointment, the Igbo Renaissance Forum (IRF) criticized the recent opposition to the creation of state police by Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police.

According to the forum, the IGP’s stance indicates a reluctance to embrace necessary changes in Nigeria’s policing structure.

In a statement signed by IRF’s international coordinator, Nze Ugo-Akpe Onwuka, and shared with NewsNow on Tuesday, they highlighted the urgent need for restructuring Nigeria’s policing system despite the concerns raised by the IGP.

The statement emphasized that a decentralized approach to policing would not only enhance crime-fighting effectiveness but also promote community ownership and accountability.

With Nigeria facing diverse security challenges, a centralized police force struggles to adequately address the specific threats in different regions, whereas state police could tailor their strategies to handle local security needs efficiently.

While acknowledging valid concerns about potential abuse of power by state governors, the forum proposed addressing these issues through robust oversight mechanisms, independent bodies, and a commitment to human rights protection.

Financial implications, although significant, should not overshadow the potential benefits of state police. The forum suggested collaborative funding models involving federal, state, and local governments, as well as public-private partnerships, to ensure effective policing without excessive financial burden.

By utilizing governors’ security votes as a funding source for state police, the forum believes that financial concerns can be mitigated. Despite existing challenges, the forum remains optimistic that with careful planning, accountability measures, and a dedication to professionalism, the establishment of state police in Nigeria could significantly enhance security and build trust in law enforcement within communities.

IRF urged all stakeholders to engage in open discussions about state police implementation, addressing concerns while maximizing its benefits for all Nigerians.
