Health Commissioner Akin Abayomi: Eti-Osa LGA Reports Most COVID-19 Cases in Lagos

Professor Akin Abayomi, the Commissioner for Health in Lagos state, has revealed that Eti-Osa Local Government Area has the highest number of confirmed Coronavirus cases in the state.

 

During a press briefing in Lagos, the Commissioner stated that out of the 98 confirmed cases in Lagos, 48 were recorded in Eti-Osa, 24 in Ikeja, and 11 in Lagos Mainland. Alimosho, Agege, and Ikorodu recorded one case each.

 

He mentioned that 74 out of the 98 confirmed cases are still active, while 24 have recovered and been discharged. The majority of the patients were between 30 and 59 years old, with two patients over 60 years and two others over 70 years. The Commissioner also disclosed that 64% of the patients were male, and 36% were female. Interestingly, 68% of the cases were imported within the first four weeks of confirming the index case in the state.

 

Furthermore, the Commissioner revealed that 91% of the cases were of Nigerian nationality and that since the closure of air and land borders, imported cases have decreased, with the state now experiencing local transmission of the virus.

 

In terms of the patients’ medical condition, the majority were experiencing a mild to moderate degree of the illness. As for treatment, two patients were currently on oxygen, and if it proves ineffective, they will be put on ventilators.

 

Regarding medical equipment, the Commissioner mentioned that there are about 20 ventilators in state hospitals and another 20 in private hospitals, which the state can access if necessary. Additionally, the state has three molecular laboratories for COVID-19 tests, conducting between 200 and 300 tests daily.
