Germany’s Foreign Minister Calls for Israel to Relinquish Control of Gaza Post-War with Hamas

In the aftermath of the conflict against Hamas, Germany’s Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, has recommended that Israel should hand over control of the Gaza Strip.

Baerbock emphasized the need for Palestinians to govern themselves, free from terrorism, with a democratically elected government that includes representation from the West Bank.

She highlighted the importance of infrastructure development, reforms within the Palestinian Authority, economic recovery, and the establishment of a security framework that provides guarantees for the security of both Palestine and Israel in preserving the viability of a two-state solution.

Stressing that a lasting peace and security for the Israeli people can only be achieved through the two-state solution, Baerbock underscored the significance of this path forward.

Responding to inquiries about post-war leadership, Baerbock stated on Friday, as reported by NAN, that “the Palestinians, devoid of Hamas influence, must be self-governing, free from terrorism and independently deciding through a democratically elected government that represents all Palestinians, including those residing in the West Bank.”

She acknowledged that this transition would take time, cautioning against losing sight of the long-term political objectives amidst the current conflict.

Baerbock’s remarks followed Israel’s recent announcement regarding the designation of approximately 800 hectares in the West Bank as Israeli state territory.

She emphasized the necessity of international security assurances during the interim period until two independent states can coexist peacefully alongside each other.

Involving Arab nations and ensuring active participation from Israel’s allies, such as Germany, were cited by Baerbock as crucial components in advancing the political landscape towards a sustainable solution.

She concluded by underlining the importance of Israel’s confidence in eradicating future terrorist threats emanating from Palestine, while also assuring Palestinians of their ability to live securely and with dignity on their own lands.
