Flooding affects 12 communities in Edo

Flooding caused by heavy rainfall has resulted in the submergence of at least 12 communities in Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State, following the overflow of River Niger.

The affected communities, including Udaba-Ekphei, Anegbette, Ukpeko Orle, Ofukpo, Agbabu, Osomegbe, Udochi, Yelwa, Ake Island, and Ifeku Islay, have experienced a significant rise in water levels, forcing residents to evacuate as their houses are inundated.

People have resorted to using canoes for transportation, and the flooding has also led to the complete submersion of agricultural produce such as rice, cassava, vegetables, and ground nuts.

Furthermore, the residents reported that churches, mosques, markets, and schools have been affected by the flood, emphasizing the urgent need for assistance from both the state and federal governments.

Mr. Isaac Omoaka, a resident of Udaba community, described the current floods as even more severe than those experienced in 2012, urging authorities at all levels to intervene before the situation leads to loss of life.

The Edo State Commissioner for Special Duties, Osasere Evboumwan, responded to the situation, stating that the government is working to provide relief for the affected communities. He mentioned plans to address the immediate needs by supplying food and preparing an IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) center, highlighting the necessity of dredging the River Niger to prevent recurring floods in the future.
