Sango Market in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, fell victim to a tragic fire incident, leaving business owners and residents grappling with the devastation caused.
Muideen Mustapha, also known as Isekolowo, a seasoned tailor at the market, saw his years of hard work and investment go up in flames. The market, known for its diverse offerings ranging from farm produce to finished goods, became the scene of destruction on the early hours of Sunday, 4th February, 2024.
Mustapha described the harrowing events, recounting the loss of property worth millions of naira, including machinery, clothing, and funds. The extent of the damage was staggering, with 24 shops completely razed by the fire. He, along with other affected individuals, made a plea for government and private support in this dire situation.
Another victim, Mr. Abdullah Ajao, also shared his anguish at the aftermath of the fire, urging for assistance from the authorities and well-meaning individuals.
Regrettably, this was not an isolated incident, as the state had witnessed several other fire outbreaks in preceding weeks. Amuloko Market in Ona Ara local government area, Ajegunle Market in Oyo, and an INEC office in Ibadan had all suffered from similar tragedies, with properties worth millions also being devoured by the flames.
Professor Charles Israel Afolabi, the Director General of Fire Academy Nigeria, highlighted the pressing need for widespread fire safety education and training, emphasizing the impact of climate change in exacerbating such incidents. He stressed the necessity for the government to prioritize fire safety measures and the recruitment of well-trained firefighters to supplement existing efforts.
Barrister Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, called for thorough investigations into the spate of fire disasters in Oyo state, urging proactive measures to prevent reoccurrences. His plea echoed the sentiments of local fire service officials who underscored the importance of proper fire extinguisher training and adherence to safety guidelines to avert such calamities.
The distressing toll of these tragedies goes beyond the physical losses, with lives and livelihoods hanging in the balance. Urgent and concerted action is imperative to mitigate the impact and prevent future tragedies.
