Family of Miguel Ovoke from Brickhall School Calls His Death an Act of God

Following the burial of Miguel Ovoke, a four-year-old pupil at Brickhall school in Abuja, his family has attributed his death to being “an act of God.”

The House of Representatives is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Ovoke’s passing.

An Ad-hoc Committee was set up by the House of Representatives to delve into the events leading to Ovoke’s unfortunate death within a four-week timeframe.

The controversy arose on April 24, 2024, when Ovoke tragically choked on a piece of meat.

Reports indicate that he was swiftly taken to the Excel Specialist Hospital after choking on the piece of meat during school lunch.

Despite the medical team’s efforts to revive him, the hospital pronounced him dead upon arrival.

Ovoke’s mother claimed that her son was deliberately harmed, sparking protests.

However, the involvement of human rights advocate Deji Adeyanju helped settle the issue as both the family and school authorities reached an agreement.

In a joint press briefing in Abuja after Ovoke’s burial at Gudu Cemetery, the family and school management labeled the incident as an unfortunate occurrence.

During the press conference, Adeyanju, along with Ovoke’s family and Brickhall school management, stated, “Both the family and school have committed to honoring the memory of the late four-year-old.

“In memory of Miguel, the family plans to establish an educational foundation offering scholarships to underprivileged students. Brickhall School intends to perpetuate Miguel Ovoke’s memory by dedicating the early years’ Resource Room at Brickhall School to Ovoke.

“Brickhall School will also provide scholarships to disadvantaged children in memory of Ovoke in collaboration with the Miguel Ovoke Foundation.

“The school reiterates its dedication to providing a top-notch and child-friendly learning environment for all students. The Ovoke family appreciates Brickhall School’s efforts in addressing this unfortunate incident.”
