Expert, Barnier attributes Nigeria power sector challenges to inefficiency and repetitive efforts

Vivien Barnier, an international energy expert and Chief Executive of ENACCESS, highlighted inefficiency and repetitive efforts as key reasons behind the challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector.

During an Open Source In Energy Access Symposium in Abuja, Barnier, an advocate for energy access, discussed the importance of adequate and strategic investment in technologies and knowledge sharing to address the country’s power sector issues.

Emphasizing the significance of knowledge sharing in overcoming Nigeria’s energy challenges, Barnier pointed out the need for collaboration and the avoidance of duplication of efforts in the sector.

He suggested that Nigeria should be more receptive to adopting new technologies, especially in the solar and renewable energy sectors, and increase investments in these areas.

Addressing the power deficit in the country, Barnier stressed the potential of technology to become more affordable in the future, making it a viable solution for Nigeria’s energy needs.

Meanwhile, at the 7th Nigerian International Energy Summit in Abuja in March 2024, Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, highlighted that approximately 92 million Nigerians still lack access to electricity, underscoring the ongoing challenges in the power sector.

Despite Nigeria’s large population exceeding 200 million, the country continues to grapple with a limited electricity supply of 4,000 megawatts.
