Eti-Osa LGA has highest confirmed COVID-19 cases in Lagos – Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi reveals

The highest confirmed COVID-19 cases in Lagos are in Eti-Osa LGA, as revealed by Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi.

Professor Akin Abayomi, the Commissioner for Health in Lagos state, stated that Eti-Osa Local Government Area has the highest number of confirmed Coronavirus cases in the state.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos today, the Commissioner mentioned that out of the 98 confirmed cases of the viral disease in Lagos, 48 were recorded in Eti-Osa, 24 in Ikeja, and 11 in Lagos Mainland. Alimosho, Agege, and Ikorodu had one case each.

The Commissioner further disclosed that 74 out of the 98 confirmed cases in the state are still active, while 24 have recovered and been discharged. He revealed that most of the patients fell between 30 and 59 years, with two patients over 60 years and two others over 70 years.

He added that 64 per cent of the patients were males, 36 per cent females. Additionally, 68 per cent of the cases were imported in the first four weeks of confirming the index case in the state. Since the closure of the air and land borders, imported cases have reduced and local transmission of the virus has started in the state.

The Commissioner also stated that most patients are experiencing a mild to moderate degree of the illness, with two patients currently on oxygen. If the oxygen does not work for them, ventilators will be used. The state has about 20 ventilators in state hospitals and another 20 in private hospitals, which can be accessed if needed. Three molecular laboratories for COVID-19 tests are available in the state, conducting between 200 and 300 tests daily.
