Enugu Indigenes Take Enugu State Commissioner of Police to Court Over Alleged Torture

Accusations of unlawful arrest and torture have landed Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mr Kanayo Uzuegbu, in the hot seat at the Federal High Court, Enugu Division.

On Wednesday, four separate suits were filed by the applicants, namely Prince Reginald Nwoye, Ifeanyi Ngene, Charles Ugwu, and Sunday Egbo.

The individuals are pointing fingers at the police commissioner, as well as CSP Chidera Ijeoma and SP Chidolue Ekeleme, for allegedly infringing upon their rights.

Prince Reginald Nwoye’s suit, under MOTION NO: FHC/EN/C8/61/24, seeks various declarations regarding the violations of his fundamental rights, such as the Right to life, Dignity of Human Person, and Personal Liberty.

Moreover, the applicants demand an unconditional release, prevention of harassment, a public apology in a national newspaper, and substantial financial compensation.

They claim that after reporting unknown gunmen and hoodlums terrorizing their community, the police arrested them instead, alleging their involvement in providing firearms to the criminals.

The applicants recount instances of detention and physical abuse at the hands of authorities, claiming that their rights have been grossly violated through unjustified arrests and torture tactics.

They emphasize that such actions are not only wrongful but also contrary to the established laws safeguarding human rights in Nigeria.

A date for the hearing of the motion is yet to be scheduled.
