Elegbeleye: NPFL’s Main Concern is Poor Officiating

The chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League, Gbenga Elegbeleye, has pointed out that the primary issue affecting the top-flight football league is the inadequate officiating.

Speaking to Sportsday, Elegbeleye criticized the questionable conduct of some referees which tarnishes the reputation of the league.

He affirmed his commitment to developing a league that is held in high regard and can rival other top leagues across the globe.

Expressing his dismay, Elegbeleye remarked, “It’s truly disheartening and perplexing to witness certain officiating decisions that raise doubts. There are instances so obvious that even a layperson could question the call.”

“This has emerged as a significant hurdle that we are diligently addressing to find a lasting solution or at least minimize its occurrence,” Elegbeleye further added.

He acknowledged that while there have been commendable officiating performances, the focus remains on eradicating the negative elements from the league.

“We are still in the process of improvement, although it’s evident that the league has progressed and is in a better state compared to the past,” Elegbeleye concluded.
