The Ekiti State Government has issued a stern warning to citizens, emphasizing the risks associated with placing dump sites in close proximity to residential buildings. According to the government, such practices could potentially expose residents to serious health hazards, including diseases like Cholera and Diarrhea.
During her visit to Ilupeju Ekiti to oversee the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Oye Local Government Area, Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, underscored the importance of maintaining a safe distance between refuse and sewage sites and residential areas to prevent health complications.
Various locations were inspected during the exercise, including Ire, Ilupeju, Oye, and Ayegbaju Ekiti, all situated in Oye LGA.
In a statement released by her Special Assistant on Media, Victor Ogunje, Mrs. Afuye urged residents to prioritize their well-being by refraining from the practice of establishing dump sites near their homes.
“This environmental sanitation is crucial for your safety and welfare. While we hope to avoid any outbreaks in Ekiti, it is essential to be mindful of the proximity of dump sites to your residences to safeguard your health,” she emphasized.
Furthermore, the deputy governor visited Oye Central Market to educate the traders about the regulations prohibiting the display of goods during environmental sanitation, as it contravenes the State Environmental Sanitation Law.
She also met with Oloye of Oye Ekiti, Oba Oluwole Ademolaju, to formally address the issue of non-compliance by some traders operating in the market during the sanitation exercise.
In a joint address to the traders with the monarch, Mrs. Afuye warned that individuals who flout the exercise regulations would face legal repercussions as they are considered saboteurs.
Oba Ademolaju expressed dismay over the traders’ behavior, stressing the need for strict compliance with the monthly environmental sanitation directives. He cautioned against a recurrence of such violations, highlighting the government’s authority to apprehend offenders and enforce penalties.
