Demolition of 800 Houses Planned by Benue State

Plans are underway to demolish approximately 800 houses constructed on waterways in Benue State to prevent flooding during the upcoming rainy season.

The General Manager of the State Urban Development Board, Mede Ternongo, made this announcement to the press in Makurdi, the state capital, on Thursday.

Commencing on Wednesday, the board initiated the demolition of more than 40 unauthorized structures that were blighting the main roads and streets in Makurdi.

Ternongo emphasized that this initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to revitalize the state capital and restore its original form.

So far, in the initial phase of the operation, over 40 makeshift shelters have been dismantled in different areas of Makurdi, clearing obstructed roads caused by unauthorized development.

The operation will persist in locations where developers have encroached on access routes, encompassing the entirety of Makurdi city.

“Our aim is to clear and open up the roads and main avenues in the city. Starting from the Southbank area, we will soon extend our work to the North Bank area as well,” said Ternongo.

He pointed out specific instances of violations such as containers encroaching on the roadside near the Catholic church in North Bank, which mar the surroundings.

Notification was duly given to affected parties to ensure they were aware of the impending demolitions, Ternongo emphasized.

The governor has pledged full support, providing necessary resources like bulldozers, payloaders, and operational vehicles to facilitate the operation.

Ternongo mentioned discussions with the governor regarding the establishment of a GSM village for mobile phone retailers after the completion of the demolition exercise.

Highlighting the imminent demolition of around 800 houses built on waterways, he stressed the importance of obtaining proper approval from the board before commencing any construction projects.
