Delta: One-Year-Old Son Allegedly Drowned by Mother

Reports have emerged stating that Sophia Nkwor, a 24-year-old woman, allegedly drowned her one-year-old son in a well at Araya community in the Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State.

Sophia Nkwor was among the suspects of various crimes paraded by the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abaniwonda Olufemi, at the State Command’s headquarters in Asaba on Thursday.

During the parade, Olufemi mentioned, “On the 28th of April 2024, a case of infanticide was reported at Oleh Division, involving a suspect named Sophia Nkwor, a 24-year-old female from Isoko South LGA, who reportedly dumped her one-year-and-one-month-old child in a well along the road in Araya community, Isoko South LGA.”

According to the commissioner, the body of the abandoned child was discovered by children playing near the scene of the incident. The mother was swiftly apprehended by law enforcement.

Olufemi confirmed that the investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Providing a rationale for her actions, Sophia Nkwor revealed that she chose to end the child’s life due to her inability to provide for him, mentioning that the child’s father had rejected him and that she was residing with her grandmother in the community.

She expressed her struggles by saying, “I had no assistance; I was solely responsible for caring for the child. I was overwhelmed and exhausted from shouldering all the responsibilities.”
