FAAN reopens runway following Dana Air incident

Notification has been given by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to the public and all concerned parties regarding the reopening of runway 18L/36R for flight operations.

A statement signed by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection in Lagos on Tuesday, disclosed this development.

The runway had been closed earlier on Tuesday morning due to an incident involving a Dana Air aircraft with the registration number 5N-BKI, which overshot the runway during landing.

FAAN’s emergency response team promptly evacuated and recovered the aircraft, followed by thorough clearance operations to ensure the runway’s safety by removing any Foreign Object Debris (FOD).

Following a joint inspection by FAAN’s Operations division and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), the runway surface was declared safe for operations to resume, accompanied by the issuance of a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM).

Recognizing the muddy area affected by the overshot, concerted efforts were made to efficiently clean it, facilitating the swift reopening of Runway 18L/36R.

FAAN expressed gratitude to the traveling public, airline partners, and stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during the temporary closure, apologizing for any inconveniences caused by the incident.

Emphasizing the commitment to ensuring safety and security for passengers, staff, and airport operations, FAAN affirmed its dedication to providing a safe, secure, and efficient air transport environment for all airport users.

The authority concluded by appreciating everyone for their continued support and understanding.
