COVID-19: UBTH confirms 3 cases, 1 death, as 25 doctors go into isolation

The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in Edo state has confirmed three cases of COVID-19 with one resulting in death. The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Darlington Obaseki, revealed this information in a statement released on April 5.

The deceased COVID-19 patient was confirmed to have passed away on Friday April 3 by the NCDC. In response to the treatment process, around 25 doctors who had contact with the patients are currently in isolation. Prof. Obaseki noted that these doctors had only been using personal protection equipment, such as surgical face-masks and gloves, while attending to the patients with the infectious disease.

As per the statement, the UBTH has received three COVID-19 positive patients, with the remaining two currently under the care of dedicated staff in an isolation ward. Prior to the confirmation of their COVID-19 status, some healthcare staff were exposed to these patients while only using Personal Protection (surgical face-masks and gloves). Currently, all exposed staff are asymptomatic and closely monitored according to current guidelines.

Additional measures have been implemented to ensure that the staff are not excessively exposed to the risks of COVID-19 infection while providing care for patients. The management and staff of UBTH have appealed for the support and understanding of the general public as they combat the battle to contain and curb COVID-19.
