Court denies ex-gov Yahaya Bello’s request to lift arrest order

In a recent development, Justice Emeka Nwite, presiding over the Federal High Court in Abuja, has rejected the appeal made by former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, to lift the arrest warrant placed against him.

The Judge stated that Bello, through his persistent refusal to appear in court for arraignment in a criminal case, had shown contempt towards the court, voiding any possibility for leniency.

During the ruling on Bello’s petition to revoke the arrest warrant, the court emphasized that the ex-governor’s actions of non-compliance were disrespectful and unacceptable.

The court dismissed Bello’s plea on the grounds that he cannot dictate terms from the comfort of his own space regarding legal proceedings that require his presence.

In addition, the Judge also disregarded Bello’s argument claiming that the Federal High Court lacks jurisdiction to address the criminal charges against him.

Justice Nwite insisted that Bello must attend the arraignment session and enter a plea before making any subsequent applications or requests.

On April 23, Bello contended that the arrest warrant was redundant as his counsel had acknowledged the receipt of the criminal charges on his behalf concerning the alleged N80 billion money laundering charge brought by the Federal Government.

More details to follow as the situation unfolds.
