Coronavirus: Governor Ikpeazu orders curfew in Abia State

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has issued a curfew in response to the recent confirmation of Coronavirus cases in the state. The 6pm – 6am curfew will be effective starting from Sunday April 26 for 7 days, with a focus on extensive contact tracing in Ukwa West, Ikwuano, and Umuahia North local government areas.

The two confirmed cases of Coronavirus, both above 70 years with underlying illnesses, are reported to be in stable condition and responding well to treatment.

A press release from the Abia state government stated the following directives:
– Extensive contact tracing is being carried out, with over 237 contacts established so far.
– Medical teams are facing challenges in some communities, and cooperation with the teams is mandatory.
– A 6pm – 6am curfew will be in place for 7 days, specially emphasizing on Ukwa West, Ikwuano, and Umuahia North local government areas.
– Transition Council Chairmen and Honorable Commissioners are tasked with ensuring full compliance with the lockdown and curfew directives.
– The committee on palliatives will be expanded to include selected members of various organizations for the distribution of food and protective items.
– Consideration will be given to providing support for artisans during the next phase of palliative distribution.
– The wholesomeness of 1800 bags of rice from the Federal Government will be examined before distribution.
– Face masks remain compulsory in Abia State, with offenders facing prosecution.

The government also emphasized the need to adhere to existing lockdown regulations, border closure, and other associated measures in addition to the curfew.
