A Call to Find a Political Resolution for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release by May 20 – Igbo Group’s Plea to Tinubu and Akpabio

The World Igbo Congress, WIC, has appealed for a political solution leading to the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, before his upcoming court appearance scheduled for May 20.

In a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu, the congress urged for Kanu’s release as a vital step towards national reconciliation. The letter was also directed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, and was signed by Chairman, Sir Festus Okere, and Secretary General, Sir Chris Ogara.

Highlighting the broader implications of Kanu’s case, the letter stated: “The case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not just an isolated incident but a reflection of a larger, more systemic issue that confronts not only Nigeria but nations worldwide—the struggle for self-determination and the response it provokes from the state apparatus.”

Advocating for a political resolution, the Congress emphasized the need for a solution that goes beyond legal battles and encompasses elements of compassion, national unity, and the recognition of the peoples’ right to self-determination. They stressed that the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu only serves to deepen societal divisions and called for actions rooted in dialogue, understanding, and respect for human rights.

Encouraging various stakeholders, the Congress stated: “To the government, we say: Embrace a political solution. Release Nnamdi Kanu as a gesture of goodwill and a step towards national healing. To the judiciary, we urge: Uphold the tenets of fair trial and justice without bias or influence. And to the people, we appeal: Stand together for the principles of fairness, equality under the law, and the right to self-determination.”

Suggesting potential pathways for resolving Kanu’s case, they proposed adherence to the 2018 African Union decision condemning IPOB’s proscription and the arrest of its members. Additionally, they called for compliance with the United Nations’ demands for de-proscription of IPOB and Kanu’s unconditional release based on the right to self-determination.

The Nigerian government was also urged to respect a Federal High Court judgment mandating Kanu’s release, emphasizing the constitutional obligation to implement such decisions nationwide.
