Committee Formed by Jigawa Assembly to Review LG Electoral Law

In response to a report by the House Committee on Local Government regarding a communiqué from the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, the Jigawa State House of Assembly has established an ad hoc committee to examine the state’s electoral and local government laws.

The IPAC in Jigawa State has advocated for changes to the state’s electoral law, proposing that political parties be given a 360-day notice period to adequately prepare for elections, citing the economic, social, and political challenges affecting citizens in the state.

Abubakar Kallo, representing Hadejia Constituency, introduced the motion that led to the formation of the committee, which was supported by Aminu Zakari, the chairman of the House Committee on Local Government, and unanimously approved by other members.

Following the approval, the Speaker of the House, Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, announced the establishment of the ad hoc committee, to be led by Deputy Speaker Sani Isyaku Abubakar.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the main opposition party in Jigawa State, has distanced itself from IPAC’s request for a one-year extension of the local government council elections, as the tenure of the Jigawa State local government councils’ chairmen and councillors is set to expire by July this year.
