The Chilean authorities canceled the Tsunami alert for the southern Magallanes region that launched this morning the 7.5 earthquake on the ritcher scale recorded in the Chilean city of Puerto Williams, the most southern world, neighboring Antarctica.
“According to the evaluation carried out, the possibility of a new tsunami is canceled, say, in the Chilean Antarctic territory,” said the director of the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred), Alicia Cebrián López, explaining that the evacuees can return although not yet the rest of the Magellan region.
According to the person responsible, there was an effective increase in sea level in the Prat and Ukrainian bases, in Antarctica, six and 23 centimeters respectively, which is considered “an instrumental tsunami. Therefore, the arrival of the tsunami to the Antarctic territory has arrived and registered with those levels,” he explained
Even so, he urged the population not to “approach the beach area, or to the Costanera”, or stop in these areas if it travels by vehicle, by simple caution.
According to the National Seismological Center (CSN), the second telluric movement was recorded at 09:07 hours about 225 kilometers south of Puerto Williams, in the environment of Cape Horn, already about 10 kilometers deep.
Given the risk, the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, suspended his agenda on Friday to supervise the emergency and evacuation of all coastal areas, including the city of Punta Arenas, place of the birth of the president of the president and the largest of the Magellan Strait.
The National Seismological Center (CSN) indicated that the earthquake was recorded at 08:58 hours (12:58 GMT) and its epicenter was located 218.1 kilometers south of Puerto Williams, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Then, the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy (SHOA) established Tsunami Alert.
Therefore, the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) requested to evacuate the coastal edge of the Magallanes region and establish the precautionary state of the beach area in the Chilean Antarctic territory.
“We call to evacuate the coastal edge throughout the Magallanes region. At the moment, our duty is to prevent and pay attention to the authorities,” Boric published.
So far there have been no material damage or affected people or injuries, and the authorities remain attentive to the risk of abnormal variations at sea level in coastal areas.
