Call for Peace Talks between ASUU and University of Abuja Management by House of Representatives

The ongoing strike between the Academic Staff Union, ASUU, and the University of Abuja management has prompted the House of Representatives to push for a resolution.

During a meeting at the National Assembly in Abuja, Rep Abubakar Fulata, the Chairman of the House Committee on University Education, urged for a truce between the two parties. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, along with a team of ASUU members, were present at this gathering.

Confirming the government’s removal of universities from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), Fulata stressed the importance of maintaining academic activities without disruption.

In a statement, Fulata mentioned, “Our priority is to ensure that academic activities in Nigerian universities continue seamlessly. The complexities faced by university managements under IPPIS necessitated our intervention.

He added, “Through our efforts and the responsiveness of President Bola Tinubu, universities were successfully excluded from IPPIS.”

Fulata made an appeal to ASUU to consider putting a halt to the indefinite strike that commenced on May 2, as reported by NAN.

Furthermore, he assured that the National Assembly is in the process of drafting a bill to tackle issues related to the appointment of a Vice-Chancellor and the governance of universities in the absence of a council.

As consultations continue for a lasting resolution, Fulata implored ASUU to consider suspending the strike.
